The short course begins with an introduction to radar systems, including pulsed, Doppler, and continuous wave (CW) radars, introducing few key parameters like PRF, Doppler effect, clutter, and unambiguous range/speed. Pulse compression is introduced alongside waveforms such as Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) and Phase Coding, leading to a deeper understanding of Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Phase-Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW) systems. The course progresses into phased array and MIMO radar systems, covering multiplexing techniques for waveform orthogonality and optimization methods, including non-convex approaches. Topics like peak sidelobe level (PSL), integrated sidelobe level (ISL) minimization are discussed in the context of waveform optimization using techniques like coordinate descent, gradient descent, and majorization minimization. Practical applications using demo boards from Infineon and Texas Instruments are demonstrated, allowing participants to implement examples like motion detection, breathing and heart rate estimation, and angle estimation with MIMO radar. The course concludes with advanced topics in 4D-imaging MIMO radar and transmit beampattern shaping.
