Visible light communication (VLC) can facilitates multiple functionalities such as illumination, high-speed data communications, and localization. Based on the VLC technology, visible light positioning (VLP) systems estimate positions of VLC receivers based on light-emitting diode (LED) transmitters at known locations. VLP provides a viable alternative to radio frequency (RF)-based positioning systems by providing inexpensive and accurate localization services. In this talk, we consider the problem of localization in visible light systems and investigate distance and position estimation approaches in synchronous and asynchronous scenarios, focusing on both theoretical performance characterization and algorithm development. In addition, we propose a power allocation framework for VLP systems based on convex optimization approaches. Finally, we investigate the use of intelligent reflecting surfaces for visible light positioning systems. Numerical examples are presented to support the theoretical results and to illustrate the benefits of the proposed approaches.
